Interview with a Work at Home Mom

Ralyn Speerly

How long have you been in business? I began my business in 1989, but didn't register my current company name until 1993. So that would make a total of 15 years

Why did you decide to become a work at Home Mom? I was having to work so much for other employers that I was about ready to give the babysitter a picture of me so that my kids remembered what I looked like. I wanted to do something that didn't require a babysitter, so that I could raise my children myself.

Why did you chose the business you chose? The opportunity was there. I started my company with specialty gifts and actually went by Ralyn Speerly, Specialty Gifts. Since then, the distributor has branched out so far that it's harder to sell their items, because everybody does. I then branched into selling my own crafts (coerced by a friend) and started taking in other crafters items as well. How I got my company name was by somebody asking me what all I made and sold -- I responded with, "everything under the rainbow." It's gotten harder these days to make money selling your crafts, so I started looking for something else to add to my company. I decided on a service that I already used and knew to be very valuable, Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. My company name gives me the flexibility to add more divisions to it. I now have an online craft mall that also features the specialty gifts, but I make more money with Pre-Paid Legal Services.

What's been the hardest part about being a Work at Home Mom? The hardest part about being a work-at-home mom is getting people to take you seriously. People seem to think it's a game or past time and not a real business.

What's been the best part about being a work at home mom? The best part about being a work-at-home mom is that my hours are flexible, so I can do what I want - when I want. Plus, although my children are now too old for a babysitter, they were home with me instead of somebody else.

If you could give other work at home moms 1 piece of advice what would it be? Don't let anybody steal your dream! It's not easy running your own business, but nobody can stop you but you.
